Chinese short video-sharing app, TikTok says adult nudity and sexual activities accounted for 30.9pc of all content it removed for violating community guidelines in the first six months of the year.
TikTok has been involved in a data privacy war with the United States and India with the two countries accusing the firm of relaying user information to the Chinese Government.
According to TikTok Global Transparency Report, between January 1st and June 30th, it removed 104,543,719 videos from the site which is less than 1 percent of all videos uploaded by users during the period under review.
“Of those videos, we found and removed 96.4pc of videos before a user reported them, and 90.3pc were removed before they received any views.” The firm stated.
22.3pc of the videos were pulled down due to minor safety, illegal activities, and regulated goods were 19.6pc, suicide, self-harm, and dangerous acts videos were 13.4pc. Violent and graphic content accounted for 8.7pc of all videos removed.
The remaining percent was harassment and bullying, integrity and authenticity, hate speech, dangerous individuals, and organizations accounted for the remaining percentage.
According to the firm, India tops the list of violators with 37,682,924 videos having been removed, USA 9,822,996, Pakistan 6,454,384, Brazil 5,525,783, the United Kingdom 2,949,620.
“As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, we relied more heavily on technology to detect and automatically remove violating content in markets such as India, Brazil, and Pakistan,” TikTok said in the report.
Tiktok vs Governments
“From time to time we receive requests from government agencies to restrict or remove content on our platform in accordance with local laws. We review all material in line with our Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, and applicable law, and take the appropriate action. If we believe that a request isn’t legally valid or doesn’t violate our standards, we may restrict the availability of the reported content in the country where it is alleged to be illegal or we may take no action,” The firm said in the report.
TikTok’s owner, Bytedance sealed a deal with Oracle and Walmart on Sunday for a 20pc stake in TikTok Global deflecting an imminent ban by the US government unless a sale agreement was reached with American firms.
