Amazon, the international e-commerce giant, has announced its plans to launch Amazon.co.za in South Africa in 2024. This move is set to provide a significant boost to small businesses in the country and reshape the e-commerce landscape.

A Boost for Small Businesses

Amazon’s entry into the South African market is expected to provide local sellers, brand owners, and entrepreneurs with the opportunity to grow their businesses. More than 60% of sales on Amazon’s platform come from independent sellers, most of which are small and medium-sized businesses. This vast selection of products, competitive prices, and great convenience are set to benefit consumers across South Africa.

Starting from October 17, 2023, independent sellers in South Africa can register their businesses on sell.amazon.com/south-Africa. This early registration process allows businesses to prepare for the official launch of Amazon.co.za in 2024.

The launch of Amazon.co.za marks a new era for e-commerce in South Africa. The online retail giant’s entry into the market is expected to stimulate competition and innovation. However, Amazon will also face stiff competition from local online marketplace Takealot.com.

Despite the challenges, Amazon’s launch is eagerly anticipated by many local businesses. Johannesburg-based African Mamas Crafts and Reader’s Warehouse are among those looking forward to the opportunities that Amazon’s presence will bring.
