Safaricom

It is with utter disgust and a burning rage that I address you, Safaricom. You, the telecommunications giant that once stood as a beacon of hope and innovation in Kenya, have revealed your true colors. On June 25th, 2024, you shamelessly succumbed to the demands of a corrupt and thieving regime, throttling and shutting down the internet for the better part of the evening.

While brave Kenyans took to the streets in over 30 counties, protesting against the suffocating weight of high taxes and the pervasive stench of corruption, you, Safaricom, chose to silence their voices. You aided and abetted a government that has lost its legitimacy, a government that thrives on the exploitation and suffering of its own people.

Your actions are not just a betrayal of the trust that millions of Kenyans have placed in you, but also a blatant violation of their fundamental human rights. The right to freedom of expression, the right to access information, the right to peaceful assembly – all trampled upon in your desperate attempt to appease your political masters.

In today’s interconnected world, the internet is not a luxury, but a lifeline. It is a tool for communication, education, business, and activism. By shutting it down, you have not only disrupted the lives of countless Kenyans but also endangered their safety. In times of crisis, the internet is a vital means of sharing information, organizing help, and documenting abuses.

Your complicity in this act of oppression reeks of corruption and cowardice. Have you forgotten your roots, Safaricom? Have you forgotten that you were built on the backs of hardworking Kenyans, who have loyally supported you through thick and thin?

We, the people of Kenya, will not stand idly by while our rights are trampled upon. We demand answers, Safaricom. We demand accountability. You may have silenced our voices for a night, Safaricom, but you have not extinguished the fire that burns within us. We will continue to fight for our rights, for our freedom, and for our future. We will not be silenced. We will be heard.
