#discovermyafrica

The Office of the African Union Commission Chairperson’s Youth Envoy, in collaboration with Google, has launched the #DiscoverMyAfrica Shorts Challenge. This month-long initiative aims to showcase the rich diversity, heritage, and vibrant spirit of Africa through the power of short videos.

Empowering African Youths to Share Their Stories

Running throughout May, the challenge invites YouTube creators across Africa to share their unique perspectives using the hashtag #DiscoverMyAfrica. Chido Mpemba, the AU Chairperson’s Youth Envoy, emphasizes the initiative’s focus on empowering young Africans.

“The #DiscoverMyAfrica challenge is a platform for African youth to share their stories and rich cultural heritage with a global audience in a unique way,” Mpemba said. “Partnering with Google fosters creative expression and discussion around responsible content creation, digital preservation, and the impact of AI on Africa’s creative industries.”

Celebrating African Culture Through Diverse Shorts

The YouTube Shorts Challenge encourages creators to capture various aspects of African life in their short videos. This can include anything from music and art to food, fashion, and local landmarks.

Google plans to further celebrate Africa’s vibrant music scene. YouTube Music Nights in Nigeria and South Africa will showcase the infectious rhythms of Afrobeats and Amapiano. Additionally, two dedicated playlists – “Africa’s Next Wave” and “Africa Superstars” – will highlight both emerging talents and established artists who have made the continent a global music powerhouse.

Workshops to equip aspiring filmmakers and content creators are also available. These workshops, including a dedicated Nollywood workshop in Nigeria and broader #DiscoverMyAfrica workshops, aim to provide valuable insights and resources to creators of all levels.
