ios 18

Rumors have swirled for months about iOS 18, hinting at the biggest update ever for Apple’s mobile operating system. Now, a new leak sheds light on Apple’s ambitious plans, centered around a powerful infusion of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his Power On newsletter, reveals Apple’s strategy. iOS 18 will leverage a combination of on-device processing and dedicated servers equipped with Apple’s custom chips to unleash a range of AI features. This move positions Apple as a serious contender in the AI race.

A key target is Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant. Gurman suggests improvements to Siri’s voice capabilities, aiming for a more conversational feel. This, coupled with “proactive intelligence” features, promises to make Siri a more helpful companion in daily tasks.

The reach of AI extends beyond Siri. Gurman mentions features like:

  • Automatic notification summaries: Get the gist of notifications without needing to open every app.
  • Voice memo transcription: Effortlessly convert voice recordings into text.
  • News article summaries: Quickly grasp the essence of news articles.

These features build upon existing AI functionalities like app suggestions and calendar entries, further streamlining the user experience.

The Photos app is also getting an AI boost. While Gurman acknowledges it might not match the sophistication of recent advancements from Adobe, AI-powered photo editing tools are still in the pipeline.

Many features will feel familiar to iOS users, but the level of improvement promises to be significant. Apple seems to be aiming for a similar level of functionality as rival AI tools like Microsoft’s Copilot, which offers similar text summarization capabilities. This focus on AI reflects Apple’s acknowledgment of the need to catch up with competitors in the AI race.

Gurman cautions that Apple’s AI announcements might not be as groundbreaking as those from OpenAI and Google. Part of this stems from Apple’s yearly software release cycle compared to the more frequent updates from competitors like OpenAI.

Despite these challenges, iOS 18 appears to be a major step forward for Apple. Rumors suggest collaboration with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT alongside Apple’s in-house AI tools. With the rise of AI, Apple’s next steps in this realm are crucial. iOS 18 seems poised to be a significant leap, offering a glimpse into an AI-powered future for iPhones.
