In recent years, social media has become a major part of our daily lives, with billions of users worldwide. However, not all social media platforms are equal, and some have struggled to keep up with the changing times, some naturally, some because of shady businesses, and one because of a certain billionaire, and now Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta is planning to launch a social media app that will take advantage of the downward spiral Elon Musk is taking Twitter.

Twitter Struggles to Keep Up

Since being bought by Elon Musk, Twitter has faced numerous issues, including incredible amounts of downtime, bugs, and weird features and Meta wants to fully take advantage of this by launching a text updates social media app.

According to a Reuters report, Meta is exploring the standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates because the company believes there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests.

Meta’s Social Media App

Meta’s social media app will be based on a similar framework that powers Mastodon, a Twitter-like service that was launched in 2016. Mastodon has seen a positive uptick in usage since Twitter started having issues. More than two million users are estimated to have flocked to Mastodon since Elon Musk took over Twitter.

Another news report from Moneycontrol states that the app, codenamed P92, will be Instagram-branded and allow users to register/login to the app through their Instagram credentials.

Personally, I think Meta’s plan is coming at the right time as its primary brand, Facebook is facing difficulties in capturing the interest of younger users. Despite investing significantly in the metaverse, a digital realm where individuals communicate and conduct activities, there are limited indications of immediate gains. Instagram is also facing stiff competition from TikTok.
