Microsoft‘s Africa Development Center (ADC) has entered into a partnership with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) to introduce a new curriculum for engineering students.
The goal of the partnership is to increase access to digital skills training and create opportunities in the digital space. The ADC is striving to improve the tech talent pipeline, starting from primary school and continuing through professional development.
The ADC has implemented several initiatives aimed at closing the skills gap between the classroom and the workplace. These initiatives range from coding classes for children to the highly technical Game of Learners hackathon, which provides university students with the opportunity to develop real-world solutions under the guidance of industry professionals.

The partnership between ADC and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology is part of Africa’s digital Transformation Strategy, which aims to provide an e-skills development program to 300 million people by 2025.
The new curriculum will provide students pursuing STEM-related courses with access to updated resources, courses, and assessments. The curriculum will also be designed with industry input, allowing students to develop hands-on tech skills that will be valuable throughout their careers. Irene Githinji, ADC Student and Education Engagement Program Manager, notes that while the technology sector is constantly searching for new talent, students graduating from universities often lack the application skills needed for software engineering fundamentals.

Ms. Githinji also emphasizes the importance of transitioning from paper exams to online assessments. With the increasing use of technology, online assessments are becoming the norm, and students who have never taken coding exams online may be at a disadvantage when seeking employment in the tech industry.
