Safaricom’s New M-Pesa app tops the most downloaded apps in Kenya from the Google Playstore according to a digital intelligence provider for enterprise and small to mid-sized business customers, Similarweb.

Unlike other years where social media apps like WhatsApp take the top spots, in 2021, dominating the list are mobile loan apps like Lioncash and Kashway showing the thirst for an easy source of credit for Kenyans who don’t have accounts with banks and other traditional financial institutions.

This is despite the government’s bid to clamp down on the issuance of high-interest loans as well as the predatory practices that have accompanied the digital lending industry’s massive growth.
