Netflix ads

Video streaming giant, Netflix revealed that it would be rolling out its ad-supported plan on the 3rd of November. Called Basic with Ads, this ad-supported plan will cost just $6.99 a month in the US. This new price in the US is $3 lower than the current $9.99 a month Basic plan.

Netflix says that Basic with Ads will be available in 12 countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

The company had earlier mentioned in April 2022 that it was considering the ad-supported initiative in response to the loss of subscribers exacerbated by inflation, rampant password sharing, the war in Ukraine, and fierce competition

Netflix says that Basic with Ads offers all the features as Netflix’s Basic plan, with a few differences: Video quality up to 720p/HD; an average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour. Also, some movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions and you would not have the ability to download titles.

At launch, ads will be 15 or 30 seconds in length and will play before and during shows and films. To help advertisers reach the right audience — and ensure the ads are more relevant for consumers — Netflix says it will offer broad targeting capabilities by country and genre (e.g. action, drama, romance, sci-fi). Advertisers will also be able to prevent their ads from appearing on content that might be inconsistent with their brand (e.g. sex, nudity or graphic violence).

In July 2022, we reported that Netflix partnered with Microsoft on the new ad-supported subscription plan.

Many of Netflix’s competitors are already offering cheaper, ad-supported plans. Hulu, HBO Max, NBCUniversal’s Peacock, and Paramount+ all have ad-supported plans and Disney last month announced it would introduce its ad-supported Disney+ plan late in 2022 in the U.S.
