oppo reno8 series kenya

We have now had and reviewed four generations of the OPPO Reno series, in house is the OPPO Reno8 5G and this series has come a long way. We put the new device to the test and how the newest Reno fares in day-to-day use compared to others in the same range.

For full details and itsy-bitsy specifications on the device, read our hands-on here.

OPPO Reno8 5G Build Quality and Appearance.

The Reno series is known for its design, build, and appearance and the newest Reno8 series is no different. Our device is in shimmer black, a matte-like kind of black that reflects light ever so slightly but doesn’t leave dirt or fingerprints on the back like many devices in the range.

Following the current design trends, OPPO carries on the flat sides that were on the Reno 7 4G. This makes it easy to hold and comfortable to use single-handedly.

The phone is pretty light but does not feel cheap despite being made entirely of plastic, with no aluminum sides or glass back.

The device is also available in a shimmer gold variant

OPPO Reno8 5G Display

Unlike the Reno6 5G, the flat edges on the Reno8 are not complemented by a completely flat display up top. We get a fairly large 6.4-inch AMOLED display, a small selfie camera cutout at the top left, it has fairly thin bezels which help offer an immersive experience, except for the chin at the bottom, (PS. it’s the only con with this device!).

The AMOLED display has a full-HD+ resolution, 90Hz refresh rate, and 180Hz touch-sampling rate, compared to the devices in the same range which have 90Hz, OPPO should have bumped up the screen refresh rate to have that edge on the competition.

The Reno8 display is beautiful, you also get a bump up to 800 nits of maximum brightness from 600 on the Reno7 and a 20:09 aspect ratio. OPPO has used Corning Gorilla Glass 5 over the display for protection.

The smartphone also has support for HDR10 and HLG codecs for some Free Netflix streaming.

The phone also has a fingerprint sensor hidden behind the display which work especially fast.

OPPO Reno8 5G Performance and Battery

The Oppo Reno 8 5G is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1300 SoC, an octa-core SoC clocked at 3GHz, up to 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM, and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage with a RAM expansion feature which just means the device is lightning fast and can handle any app you install including heavy-duty games. I didn’t experience any type of lag while using the device and playing Call of duty mobile for hours didn’t even overheat the device.

The OPPO Reno8 5G is a king in performance in this range. Here are the benchmark results.

However, the Reno 8 5G isn’t officially IP-certified so don’t go dunking it in water, it also only has a single bottom-firing speaker which is just unacceptable at this price range. Thankfully, the single speaker is loud enough.

It has support for Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, dual-5G standby, and dual-4G VoLTE. It also has six satellite navigation systems for better connectivity.

In terms of battery life, the new OPPO Reno8 brings new technology to the series, we now have reverse charging meaning your device can charge other devices, and 80W superVOOC charging which fills up the phone in half an hour.

The Oppo Reno 8 5G has a 4500mAh battery that easily makes it to the end of the day with at least 20 percent battery left.

OPPO Reno8 5G Camera

The Reno 8 has a triple back camera configuration for pictures and movies, with a 50-megapixel main sensor and an f/1.8 lens as its focal point. Additionally, there is a 2-megapixel macro camera with a 112-degree field of view and an 8-megapixel sensor coupled with an f/2.2 ultra-wide angle lens.

You will be happy to know the 50-megapixel primary camera with a Sony IMX766 sensor is widely used in smartphones such as the Nothing Phone 1, Realme GT Neo 3, OnePlus 10T, and even the bigger OPPO Reno 8 Pro 5G.

Compared to the previous generation, stills captured on the primary camera were quite detailed, and the colors were accurate even in bright conditions where dynamic range is usually a tough ask.

The Reno 8 5G’s ultra-wide-angle camera had a slight drop in quality compared to the primary shooter but not quite as expected, the pictures don’t have any barrel distortion the colors are almost the same. The camera app has an AI scene optimization toggle which bumps up color saturation to make photos more vibrant.

The Reno series has come far in terms of camera software, the portraits on the Reno8 5G have the best edge detection in the series and add a very natural blur to the background.

Low-light camera performance was okay and the phone can add a lot of light to capture good shots in darker environments with Night-mode enabled. The phone can however take long-exposure shots which did result in blurry photos.

Just like on the Reno7 series, selfies from the 32-megapixel camera are excellent in daylight as well as in low light. Even selfie portraits taken in low light conditions are excellent!

Finally, just like the Reno6 5G, the Reno8 5G shoots video at up to 4K 30fps for the primary camera and 1080p for the selfie shooter. Props to OPPO for bringing this back! The phone relies on EIS to stabilize footage and does a decent job.

Verdict

So, Should you consider the device, avoid it or just buy it? The competition in this segment is stiff, however, the Oppo Reno 8 5G holds its weight, it is a well-designed smartphone with capable hardware priced at Ksh 59,999

It offers great performance that’s on par with others in the segment and has decent cameras for the price. ColorOS is also a nice touch and gives you a good Android experience. The lack of OIS, stereo speakers, and the big chin on the display are the only caveats on the device, but at this price range, you would expect some.
