safaricom the bar

Safaricom, East African Breweries PLC (EABL), and Vivo Energy Kenya have announced a partnership to launch The Bar and Shell apps on the M-PESA Super App.

The Bar app will allow customers to shop for drinks with free delivery or book a bar setup for parties. The app will be integrated with the M-PESA Super App, so customers can pay for their purchases using their M-PESA accounts.

The Shell app will provide customers who fuel at Shell outlets with a loyalty program that will automatically be linked to their M-PESA accounts. When customers fuel and pay with M-PESA, they will earn points that can be redeemed for select items and services at Shell outlets.

“We are excited to welcome East African Breweries and Vivo as partners on the M-PESA Super App,” said Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom. “The Bar and Shell apps will provide our customers with the convenience of shopping online and fueling up at Shell outlets, all within the M-PESA Super App. These partnerships are part of our goal to enable our customers to do more through the M-PESA Super App by connecting them digitally to the different businesses and services on our platform.”

The two apps are set to be rolled out in the coming weeks and will join more than 60 other firms that are providing their services through apps hosted on the M-PESA Super App, including government parastatals and counties. Safaricom provides hosting, distribution, and marketing support to the different businesses on the app.

“The entire Shell family is proud to get closer to our customers who are patrons of this great platform,” said Mark Senteu, Country Marketing Manager for Vivo Energy Kenya. “By joining Shell Club through the USSD *523# and through the Shell club mini app on MPESA Super App, our customers will now automatically earn Shell Club points any time they pay through M-PESA.”

The M-PESA Super App has been growing rapidly in recent months, with more than 3 million customers now using the app. In Safaricom’s latest financial year to April 2023, the Super App processed 489 million transactions with a value of KSh. 1.3 trillion.

This partnership is a significant development for the M-PESA Super App, and it is likely to drive further growth in the number of users and transactions on the app. The Bar and Shell apps will provide customers with convenient and rewarding ways to shop and fuel up, and they will help to make the M-PESA Super App an even more essential part of everyday life in Kenya.
