smartphone warranty

A very important question people ask when purchasing their smartphones is the warranty, 99% of people will not purchase a new device with no warranty, however, very few of these people actually read the fine print on what damage the warranty covers, today we take a deep dive into how exactly they work.

Unknown to many of us, phone warranties are very limited, they just guarantee that you can get your device repaired or replaced only when it runs into manufacturer flaws, any other accidents are not covered.

What do phone warranties cover?

Warranty covers are manufacturers essentially promising to cover mechanical and electrical failures that keep your phone from doing its job, so if your phone works okay right out the box, chances you’ll need the warranty are close to zero, well unless your phone blows up spontaneously.

All warranties are different, to be safe, make sure you read carefully each time you buy a new device.

So will my manufacturer repair my phone’s cracked screen? Yes, but only if your phone arrived with the damaged display, then you can ask for a replacement unit. Did your phone fall and crack within your warranty period? In that case, the manufacturer will not repair it as they will determine that you are to blame or that you have invalidated your warranty somehow.

Unlike phone Insurances, phone warranties will not cover any accidental damage on your device, you should probably forget the warranty if you dropped it in water or onto a hard surface, you’re actually better off pursuing your own repairs.

For instance, here’s what OPPO Kenya’s warranty policy states:

  • OPPO reserves the right to object replacement request if the cause of malfunction and/or abnormality of the device is due to accessories such as protective cover, screen protector, etc. OPPO may replace with a new accessory based on circumstances.
  • All devices assessed to have physical damage or related cause will not be covered under warranty. However, can be repaired with a service fee:
  • Damage and distress caused by improper use such as dropping the device, liquid damage, force pressure, etc. are not covered
  • Damage and distress caused by irresistible external forces (flood, fire, thunder, earthquake, transport accident) is not covered
  • Device wear and tear by nature. This includes a frontal display, back cover, physical buttons, etc. is not covered
  • OPPO reserves the right to object replacement request if the cause of malfunction and/or abnormality of the device is due to accessories such as protective cover, screen protector, etc. OPPO may replace with a new accessory based on circumstances.
  • If the device is assessed to be beyond economical repair, OPPO will provide you a recommendation of purchasing a refurbished device.

Xiaomi states:

  1. Manufacturing warranty applies on:
    • Manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship of the product. This warranty applies when the product is used under normal conditions and for the purpose for which the product was designed.
    • Warranty does not cover natural wear & tear, usage under extreme conditions, damage due to improper care (accident, misuse, or negligence), and damage caused by acts of God such as floods, fires, or earthquakes. If any damage occurs in/on the outer surface of the product, including but not limited to cracks, dents, or scratches on the exterior cases, screens, camera lenses, buttons, and other attachments.

Basically, your warranty covers nothing. I’d suggest you consider insuring your devices against accidental damages.
